【Making Voice】コンパクト新型カヤック「WATER ARMOR」〜日常に遊びと刺激を。デザイナー&生産者へインタビュー~

[Making Voice] The compact new kayak "WATER ARMOR" ~ Adding fun and excitement to your daily life. An interview with the designer and producer ~

The second long-awaited new model from "FOLBOT" is "WATER ARMOR".

Based on the reputable "ALPINA-1 310" frame from Fuji Canoe, this is the smallest and lightest folding kayak in the series, developed with the theme of LIGHT & COMPACT.

We interviewed Mr. Fujita from Fuji Canoe and the two designers from FOLBOT in detail about the features of its functionality and design.

[Functionality] Overwhelming maneuverability as a "mountain bike on water"

―The "WATER ARMOR" was developed based on Fuji Canoe's "ALPINA-1 310" frame. What are its features?

Mr. Fujita: Well, I think it's definitely its "minimum" and "lightest" characteristics.

The total length is 310cm.

The width and depth are designed the same as the "TACTICAL FOLDING KAYAK", but the length is like shortening it by removing one rib frame.

―When you actually hold it, it's so light you wouldn't think it's a kayak.

Mr. Fujita: Right? It only weighs 11.5kg.

Designer: That's about the same weight as FOLBOT's largest SUP model (VERSATILE SUP).

―It makes it easier to carry around.

Designer: The width of the storage bag is also approximately 75cm, which is 25cm more compact compared to the storage bag width of approximately 100cm for the "TACTICAL FOLDING KAYAK".

With a weight of 11.5kg and this size, I think it will be easier to travel by public transport such as trains and buses.

―Does the assembly time also shorten because it's more compact?

Mr. Fujita: Since there are fewer frames, I think it will take less than 10 minutes once you get used to it.

―That's quick! With it being so compact, what about its capacity and load capacity?

Mr. Fujita: It's basically designed for "1 adult + luggage," so the load capacity is about 100 kg, I suppose.

If you have a small child up to early elementary school age, you can even attach a seat in the front and paddle with two people.

―It seems like it can carry more luggage than I imagined! What are its characteristics in terms of ride comfort?

Mr. Fujita: The rocker (curve) of the hull is quite pronounced, so it has high maneuverability.

So, as it looks, it can turn and make tight turns, which makes paddling fun (laughs).

It might take a little getting used to operating it at first, but once you can paddle well, I think it's a fun boat.

I frankly tell people, "If you're looking for straight-line stability or speed, you should choose a different boat."

But if you want to enjoy freely maneuvering a boat in intricate waterways or places with currents, this is the one.

―I see. Who do you recommend it to?

Mr. Fujita: Well, it's often chosen as a "second boat" for those who already have an all-round kayak, or as a "children's kayak."

It might not be quite enough for serious touring, but I'd recommend it to those who "want to casually play on a nearby lake or river" or "want to maneuver easily for fishing."

I've even heard of people using it to go to a river flowing along a train line, and "fishing for one station's worth while drifting."

And also for those who have a strong desire to "have fun" (laughs).

I once rode the 310 model on the Keta River in Tenryu-ku, Hamamatsu City, Shizuoka Prefecture. The river was quite winding, and paddling upstream was really tough, but it was fun (laughs).

Anyway, I want people to use this "play tool" in such a free style.

[Design] The pursuit of functional beauty, wearing a "bulletproof vest"

―What is the meaning behind the name "WATER ARMOR"?

Designer: "WATER ARMOR" literally translates to "water armor."

After all, when it comes to FOLBOT, I want it to have tactical design elements.

―So that's what it meant! Is the design also inspired by armor?

Designer: Yes, this hexagonal deck pad was actually designed with the silhouette of a US military bulletproof vest (body armor) as its motif.

I think this is an area where we were able to express the "WATER ARMOR" identity.

―The MOLLE system is also adopted for this deck pad.

Designer: Yes, we incorporated MOLLE system and Velcro details, just like a bulletproof vest.

Of course, functionality is necessary, and I also wanted the fun of customizing it with patches.

And this time, we printed the "FOLBOT" logo on the front deck pad.

―There's also a circular logo on the nose.

Designer: Yes, we put it there.

Also, similar to the new kayak "SNIPER", we added prints on the sides as well.

The "FOLBOT" logo is on the left side, and the product number and codename are on the right side.

Because I want it to stand out (laughs).

―The coaming has MOLLE system details, right?

Designer: That's right, after using the "TACTICAL FOLDING KAYAK",

I thought it would be convenient to attach the MOLLE system to the front coaming because it wouldn't interfere with paddling and would be useful for attaching accessories like cup holders, so I adopted it this time.

―It's a design that's particular about practicality. Is it available in only one color?

Designer: Yes, "Compass Ghost Grey." Only one color.

―It looks cool.

Designer: Right?

ーThrough the Interview

"WATER ARMOR" seemed to be a kayak that embodies "playfulness" while being compact and practical.

Add play and excitement to your daily life with WATER ARMOR.
