This is the 14th installment of our series introducing great spots for kayaking and SUP.
This time, we kayaked and SUPed on Lake Aoki in Nagano Prefecture.
Lake Aoki, located at the foot of the Northern Alps in Omachi City, Nagano Prefecture, is a quiet lake boasting one of the clearest waters in the prefecture.
On windless days, the surface of the lake reflects the surrounding scenery like a mirror, creating a breathtakingly beautiful sight.
In summer, you can see many fireflies from the lake, making it a spot where you can enjoy kayaking in a magical atmosphere.

"Aokiso Campground," a base camp directly connected to the lakeside
From Tokyo, it takes about 4 hours by car to Lake Aoki.
There are many interesting spots along the way, such as Karuizawa, so you can enjoy the journey.
The campsite we used this time was "Aokiso Campground."
Although simple, it is equipped with a shared cooking area, shared refrigerator, coin showers, and flush toilets.
Electricity can also be used for a fee if requested at the reception.
Pets are allowed, and in summer, you can enjoy swimming in the lake.
Another attractive point is that you can launch your kayak or SUP directly from in front of your campsite.
Since it is a relatively small campsite, it may be crowded depending on the season. It is recommended to make reservations with plenty of time in advance.
Time to launch – onto the quiet lake reflecting the Northern Alps
After setting up camp, it was time to launch.
We visited in summer with the aim of watching fireflies.
While the lake reflecting snow and autumn leaves is beautiful, the sight of lush green trees reflected on the lake surface is also exceptional.
Lake Aoki was calm with almost no wind.
We enjoyed paddling leisurely in a relaxed atmosphere.
As night approached, it was finally time for firefly viewing.
Since fireflies cannot be seen from the lakeside near the campsite, we launched our kayaks to search for them.
We were able to see many fireflies dancing between the overhanging trees and the surface of the lake.
Unfortunately, it rained, and we couldn't get good photos.
Although I can't show you pictures, experiencing the light of fireflies in the silence of the night, with only the sound of my paddle, was a luxurious moment that could only be achieved through kayaking.
However, night kayaking can be difficult for beginners, so joining a tour is recommended.

A cafe on the opposite bank of Aokiso Campground. The authentic curry is highly recommended.
Why not kayak from the campsite to land and enjoy lunch?
▶ HAKUBA ZEKKEI SAUNA -ao-
"Hakuba Zekkei Sauna ao" is a sauna facility next to "ao LAKESIDE CAFE."
It's also recommended for healing your tired body after paddling.
▶ Hakuba Area
The Hakuba area, slightly north of Lake Aoki, is lined with large stores of outdoor brands such as Patagonia, The North Face, and Snow Peak, where you can check out and shop for outdoor gear.
After a day of activities, we also recommend visiting the various hot springs scattered throughout the Hakuba area.
